Named after Jean Baptiste Biot, 1774 – 1862, a French Chemist and physicist who first drew attention to the optical differences in micas.

Biotite is an iron – magnesium – bearing member of the mica group of minerals. It is characteristically black, dark brown to red – brown, and the crystals form very thin paper like layers that (as it typical of micas) are stacked one on top of  each other. Where the crystals are large, their hexagonal shape may be visible.
